Little Libraries set up across the northeast to help strengthen literacy

Jul 5, 2023 | 5:00 PM

The Nipawin and Area Early Years Family Resource Centre (NAEYFRC) is helping to promote literacy in the northeast.

They’re sponsored little libraries that have been popping up across various communities filled with a variety of books.

Lisa Vavra, NAEYFRC coordinator, told northeastNOW the goal of the library is to make sure that everyone has access to a good book.

“It’s just to share literacy and how easy it is just to go for a walk and to get a book from a little cupboard down the street and to be able to reuse the books that you love,” she said.

Vavra is encouraging people who have extra books that they’re considering selling to instead put them in the little library to share the joy of a good book.

There are currently five locations in the northeast sponsored by NAEYFRC which includes Nipawin, Carrot River, White Fox, Codette and most recently Arborfield.

Not only are the little libraries filled with books, but they are also filled with some pantry essentials and items that families in the community may need.

“There are also things people can donate like diapers, toiletries, dried goods, spices, macaroni or things like that,” said Vavra.

For those wanting to donate to any of the locations, books for all reading levels and ages are welcome as well as dried goods that can withstand being outside for potentially an extended period of time.
