Northeast kids play hide and seek with a plushies

Jul 7, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Soft and squishy friends were hidden across the northeast to celebrate Canada Day.

Rachel’s Handmade Huggables decided to spread joy in Melfort by hiding the plush animals in different locations in the community.

Creator of all things cuddly Rachel Enge told northeastNOW that she was inspired by a trend from other crafters on social media.

“They’ll do like what’s called like a hide and seek or a lost and found. Just as a kind of way to give back to the community to say thanks for supporting me.”

The Melfort area wasn’t the only place touched by Enge’s kindness as she decided to spread cheer in Creighton and Flin Flon, Man as well.

While on her way to Flin Flon, she enlisted the help of her husband Brian who saw the joy that the plushes brought to the community first-hand.

“He did happen to see one and got a picture of the little girl who found it,” she said. “I don’t know where the other two went. So that’s kind of a little bit of a mystery.”

The journey to becoming a plush creator isn’t anything new to Enge as she has been crocheting since she was a teenager but it was the COVID-19 pandemic that led her to jump into sharing her passion.

“When COVID hit in 2020, Christmas stores weren’t really open and I like to shop locally for gifts for my family. I just so happen to see come across a crochet pattern for baby Yoda and I thought, hey, I could try this.”

After sharing her first few items with family and friends, Enge dove into creating patterns she found online. Since then her passion has only grown.

Enge shared that her business name Rachel’s Handmade Huggables is the direct result of how cuddly her creations are.

“The goal is to always make them cute. I always use chenille yarn. They’re always soft to the touch so you just want to hug them all the time.”
