A former member of the Melfort Mustangs recently got the chance to not only attend his first-ever NHL development camp but his first two.

Noah Giesbrecht, a 24-year-old netminder from South Surrey, B.C. suited up for both the Philadelphia Flyers and the Winnipeg Jets, in just the past week.

Giesbrecht told northeastNOW that while it was a bit of a tight fit, both organizations were flexible, giving him an added opportunity to train at the NHL level.

“Definitely been kind of a whirlwind, going to both camps was cool and a good experience. It was cool to see and just developing over there and getting to know the coaching staff was a good opportunity, and it was a lot of fun,” he explained.

“I think it’s a bit unusual, to go to multiple camps I don’t think happens too much, but I had that opportunity and we made it work. I left one camp early and got to the other a bit late, but both teams were OK with it, so it kind of worked out in my favour.”

The 6-4, 194-pound backstop only spent one season with the blue and green, back in 2018/19, playing a combined 23 games.

He said that while his time with the Stangs wasn’t exactly extended, it was still a huge part of his journey.

“I think Melfort had a lot to do with where I am now, just being able to go on a run there and playing so much hockey in such a short period of time. From my time there, I’ve just kept making small jumps and working at my craft every single day. It’s something where you’re either all in or not at all and you have to make up your mind quick, and so far it’s worked out for the best,” Giesbrecht added.

“I would still recommend Melfort to any young guy out there; I always emphasize that route to future kids, even if they’re not from Saskatchewan. I keep saying that it doesn’t matter where you play, it’s all about if you’re actually getting the opportunity.”

Giesbrecht has since spent time in higher leagues, such as the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the University of Windsor Lancers in USports and the Ferris State University Bulldogs in NCAA Division I.

He has already suited up with the Bulldogs for two seasons and has two years of eligibility left, and plans to head back there for his third season, this fall.
