Humboldt District Hospital Foundation receives $200k donation from BHP

Jul 13, 2023 | 3:20 PM

BHP recently donated $200,000 to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation (HDHF).

This will allow the HDHF to acquire two bladder scanners, a Glidescope, and other enhanced operating room equipment.

According to the foundation, this will support Inpatients, emergency, and Home Care for the better of surgeons and their patients.

“We’re grateful to BHP for their continued support,” HDHF executive director, Lorrie Bunko told northeastNOW. “They’re just a really good group of people to work with and they’re always very interested and intrigued into our health care facility and what it’s able to offer, so we’re just very grateful for them.”

Bladder scanners are an enhanced diagnostic tool that is able to test the volume in the bladder, which is a safer and less invasive way of testing the bladder volumes without having to do other procedures, that can put the patient at risk for infections.

The hospital in Humboldt used to have one until about four or five months ago when it unexpectedly quit working.

The two will now replace the pre-existing one and add an additional one, which will prevent Home Care and the emergency room department from having to share.

“We were ready because of the patient census increasing, that one scanner was well used. Having the two arrive at the same time is going to make a huge impact amongst staff, that won’t be having to run around trying to find just one. A huge benefit for those at home who can now avoid having to make an extra trip to see their doctor,” added Bunko.

“There was a time when a patient actually had to go to Saskatoon. It’s a piece of equipment that is really needed and we can do on-site, and we don’t want people to have to travel to other centres if they don’t have to if we can have the equipment.”

The $200,000 donation brings BHP’s lifetime total to $731,575.

Bunko explained it’s quite an amazing amount of money in such a short time, especially considering how little potash they’ve sold to this point.

As far as BHP is concerned, however, they know the importance of the healthcare facility to the district and its future development.

“Assisting the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation in the purchase of priority equipment is always an exciting opportunity for BHP to ensure health and safety,” said Simon Thomas, President of Potash.

“This additional donation is improving the welfare of local community members by providing access to leading health care services, as we bring people and resources together to build a better world. It is important the communities that surround our projects and offices have access to leading medical services for the overall health and wellbeing of local residents.”
