Two Melfort boys propel Team Saskatchewan to gold

Team Saskatchewan won the U18 Futures Western Challenge for football this past weekend, with the help of some northeast players.

Two Melfort Comets were a part of that team, which headed down to Sherwood Park, Alta.

Brody Taylor and David Goudy were a big part of the squad’s offence, as a running back and wide receiver respectively.

“It was a lot of fun seeing him in the huddle and kind of knowing that the play was up to us to kind of make it good,” explained Goudy. “We were representing Melfort together, so it was just a really great feeling to look over and see him next to me.”

Team Sask dominated the week, going undefeated with two wins against Team Alberta White and Team Alberta Blue, outscoring them a combined 109 to six.

Goudy added this proves what Saskatchewan can do against other provinces because of the passion they have for the game of football.

“It just shows the coaching ability here and the determination of some of the people in Saskatchewan. It also shows that hard work can beat size, and it has been a lot of fun. Saskatchewan is doing pretty good and we’re proud of that.”

For the two boys, they will be heading into their grade 11 seasons with the Comets, later this year.

This means that they still have another two years to make the Canada Cup team (a level above the futures club).

It also means that they have two seasons left with their high school football teams and can take what they’ve learned back to their respective organization.

“I think the futures was a super great opportunity for the both of us because at least for me, it was kind of my first opportunity to play football at that level, and even just play like 12-man football rather than nine-man which is what we have here. I definitely learned a lot and I think it will prepare me to hopefully make the (Canada Cup) team next year,” explained Taylor.

“It also just gave us a kind of representation of the skill that lots of people play at, and just what we can strive to learn and improve upon. Going against like such big competition and some super great players really showed us what we need to work on, and then showed us things we can take back home to our team to just help us improve,” he added.
