Five more years: Broncos re-sign Barney as Head Coach and GM

A familiar face to the Humboldt Broncos is staying put with the club for another five years.

The team announced on Thursday that re-signed Head Coach and General Manager Scott Barney to a five-year contract beginning at the start of the 2023-24 season.

Barney first joined the Broncos in the 2018-19 season as the team’s assistant coach and was promoted to Head Coach and GM later that year. Since taking the reins, he’s amassed a 132-55-9-2 record with the Green and Gold, placing him among the most winningest coaches in the SJHL.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Humboldt Broncos’ Board of Directors for having the confidence and trust in the job we have done here and will continue to do,” said Barney.

“Our goal every time we step on the ice is how can we be better as individuals and as a team. Being part of the Broncos’ organization is truly something special for everyone involved. The community is fantastic, and my family has enjoyed every minute of being in Humboldt. We can’t wait to create more memories together.”

Barney has coached the Broncos to the playoffs every season since taking over as bench boss. He also guided the team to second-place finishes in back-to-back seasons and helped the club win the Global Ag Risk Division in 2021-22.

“The Humboldt Broncos’ board is proud and excited to extend Scott for another 5 seasons,” said the Humboldt Broncos Board of Directors in a media release. “He’s done an incredible job both on the ice putting together a consistently competitive team every year, and also with our players in development and post-secondary education opportunities. We are proud to have him, and his family in the community of Humboldt.”

Barney has helped more than 30 players reach the next level of their hockey careers by committing to post-secondary schools, with 10 coming after last past season. In total, 10 players have found homes in NCAA Division I, five have committed to schools in NCAA Division III, 12 have gone to school in USports, two to the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League, one to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference and one player has received a professional tryout.

“There’s a lot of opportunities for the players who have come through in the past few years,” Barney continued. “They all work extremely hard to get to where they want to be, and it’s our job to help them along the way. We will continue to make Humboldt the premier place to play in the SJHL and Canada.”

The Broncos are set to open the 2023-24 regular season at home when they welcome the Notre Dame Hounds to Elgar Petersen Arena on Sept. 23.
