Northern Lights Woodcarvers scavenger hunt encouraging people to explore Melfort Park

The Melfort Northern Lights Woodcarvers are hoping that a scavenger hunt will lead people to find a new passion.

They’ve partnered with the Melfort Public Library to host the event in Spruce Haven Park.

Carver Al Jardine told northeastNOW that since the park is quite large and there are a lot of things to see, families might not have seen the carvings that have been done in the park.

“Maybe we get the kids interested in coming over and checking out the carvings and paying more attention to what’s going on over in that corner of the park.”

For those wanting to go on the adventure through the park, it is expected to take approximately an hour to complete but before you head over to Spruce Haven you will need to make a stop at the library.

There you will get an instruction sheet with all of the landmarks you will need to find on your tour of the park. You will need to find 12 carvings and their names.

Although getting to see the woodcarvings makes for the perfect family outing, participants who write down all 12 names and return the sheet to the library will receive a soap carving kit.

Jardine explained soap carvings are a good way to get into the hobby of woodcarving without having to use sharp tools.

“Being that the majority of them are very young folks, we don’t want to give them sharp knives to start with, so introduce them (gradually) to show that they can use some other tools.”

The fun doesn’t stop there as those who submit their finished soap carvings will be entered for a wood carving package.

As for those who simply want to try wood carving firsthand, the group has met on Wednesdays in Spruce Haven Park, weather permitting, and encourages anyone who has questions or wants to try the hobby to come out.
