Prairie North Co-op Grocery is moving to a new location and northeastNOW got a first-hand look.

After two years of planning and one year of construction, the new grocery store will open its doors in Melfort on Aug. 17.

General Manager Terry Tremblay explained that the store had simply outgrown its old location.

“The board is always focused on long-term planning and trying to create a sustainable business that will last for decades.”

The previous location in the Melfort Mall served the area for 40 years before it reached the end of its life.

The new location will be at 500 Stonegate Boulevard.

The store had its last day on Aug. 12 and began moving to the new location the next day. There have only been four days since the move and already the shelves are stocked and ready for customers.

Tremblay acknowledges that there is some hesitation about the new store moving to the opposite end of Melfort and seniors potentially not being able to access the new store.

“We were happy that we’re able to confirm that we’ve arranged for a shuttle service. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we’re going to have pickups at the Diefenbaker place and the mall entrance.”

He added people can expect new additions such as a soup and curry bar, caramel and cheddar popcorn made in-house, lotto, and all electronic tags for products.

Food Division Manager Mario Bouvier explained that the draw of the new store is the large fresh food section that greets customers as they walk in the door.

The store is also energy efficient by using LED bulbs and door coolers to save on cooling power.
