You could be a lucky duck with the help of Nipawin Handiworks’ latest fundraiser.

Anyone who has seen the infamous rubber duck races in rivers across the world can now participate in one in Saskatchewan on Sept. 1.

Managing Director at Handiworks April Demmans told northeastNOW there are 3,000 ducks ready to race.

“However many ducks we sell, that’s all those numbers will go in to be dumped. So if we don’t sell them all, they won’t all go, just the ones that are purchased.”

For $20 you can have a duck in the competition. If all of the 3,000 sell then the winner will receive a 50/50 prize of $30,000.

The ducks will be released into the river at the first bend with the Nipawin Regional Park. The race will finish when the first duck reaches the end of the boat launch.

Although families can watch their ducks race to win the prize, those who are purchasing them must be 18.

Meanwhile, the other half of the money will stay with Nipawin Handiworks to continue their work of providing skills training and support to adults with intellectual disabilities.

Demmans explained they’re hoping this money can go towards a large purchase that is needed to facilitate group activities.

“One of our wheelchair lift vans was in an accident. It was written off last fall. We actually had to replace it with a smaller one. So we’d like to get a larger one and those vans are very expensive.”

Money will also go towards group activities such as Saskatchewan Roughriders games, horseback riding lessons, and concerts in large cities.

Ducks can be purchased at Nipawin Handiworks, or by e-transfer to glenda.handiworks@sasktel.net provided the purchaser’s name and phone number are in the e-transfer description.
