Resort Village of Tobin Lake cracking down on unsafe use of ATVs, Golf Carts

Aug 18, 2023 | 3:00 PM

The Resort Village of Tobin Lake (RVTL) is trying to make its community a safer place, by enforcing more laws, when it comes to driving ATVs and golf carts.

The Village has received numerous complaints of late when it comes to some people not following the rules of the road, when operating said modes of transportation.

As a result, their council recently spoke to local RCMP at their August meeting, which has led to police now enforcing ATVs and golf carts, within the RVTL.

“We haven’t really changed anything, we’re just trying to enforce provincial laws,” said RVTL mayor Amy Shipley. “RCMP are just going to come out and enforce a little more. We feel like the problem has just gotten worse and worse over the years, too many young people are out and driving. It’s gotten out of hand and we just need to reign it back in.”

The Village is also reminding its residents that all golf carts must be registered with them and that if you have previously registered your golf cart, but have yet to receive a number, to please stop by their office.

Drivers of golf carts also must have a valid driver’s license, there shall only be one person per seat, and the maximum speed is 20 kilometres per hour.

They are hoping this will ‘continue to keep the RVTL safe, as well as a great place to enjoy and relax.’

The RVTL announced the news on Thursday, via their Facebook page, which has since received handfuls of positive comments in return.

Comments include “That is great news. We have seen kids on golf carts as young as 9 or 10. Other times we have seen teens driving while on their phones with other teens standing or hanging off the back. Hope this helps before someone gets hurt or worse.”

Also, “Happy to hear!! We see carts driving around till 2 in the morning, so dangerous in the dark, and it’s around the same time as people are leaving the Bird.”

And, “So happy to hear this, it’s about time. Parents need to take control and not allow kids without driver’s licences to drive golf carts or ATVs.”

Finally, “As a resident, this is a problem. It is only a matter of time before some young person is injured or worse.”
