New Project

Fertilizer Distribution Centre being planned in Tisdale

Tisdale will soon be home to a new fertilizer distribution centre.

Genesis Fertilizers has partnered with Invest Tisdale to create the facility which would coincide with its urea production facility that’s being planned for Belle Plaine.

Terry Drabiuk, Vice President, Business Development for Genesis Fertilizers, told farmnewsNOW Tisdale met all the criteria they were looking for.

“It’s a solid ag area. We used a pretty rigorous, what we call concordance table to identify key areas which include access to railways, road networks, fibre (optic internet), water, gas, all that kind of stuff,” he said.

This is expected to be one of seven SuperCentres Genesis Fertilizer is planning to construct in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba. The plan is to create it in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Tisdale Agriculture Industrial Park, just outside of the Town. This would be next to C-Merak’s operations.

“Tisdale offers immense opportunity for businesses to grow and support our agriculture powerhouse sector,” said Brendan Samida, Chair of the Invest Tisdale Economic Board. “Our future is promising as farm operations and value-added processing at the place crops are harvested continue to grow, with investments pouring into land and buildings from fourth- and fifth-generation families in the Economic Region,”

Drabiuk added they need about “75,000 tonnes of investors” to make the project a reality.

“That may sound complex but basically we’re looking for people to invest in the facility and the fertilizer plant itself in Belle Plaine… the equivalent of having 75,000 tonnes come out of there, so the facility itself would be 100 per cent farmer owned.”

Once they get the investments needed, construction would go ahead with Genesis Fertilizer hoping to start sometime in the spring. They also believe this will create over 170 jobs, the vast majority being in construction and a handful at the facility once it’s operational.

Meanwhile, Genesis Fertilizer plans to host an open house in Tisdale following the 2023 harvest season. An exact date has not been chosen.
