Minor football season underway in P.A. after abundance of registrations

Prince Albert Minor Football’s season got underway on Sunday with both the peewee and bantam River Riders teams in action.

“For the first time that I can remember we actually had to cut off registrations early because we were approaching that 120 number between the three programs,” said Taras Kachkowski, the president of Prince Albert Minor Football.

There are three levels within Prince Albert Minor Football. Atom consists of grades four and five, peewee is grades six and seven, while bantam is grades eight and nine. The peewee league has 10 teams, while the bantam league has nine.

“We’re very satisfied with the numbers… compared to a lot of other sports options, we’re very affordable because we actually provide all the equipment. And I think also we’ve developed a good reputation for being a good program for developing these kids and getting them ready for high school and in some cases even beyond.”

Both River Riders teams dropped their opening game to Saskatoon. But Kachkowski, who also coaches the peewee team, said he’s more concerned about improvement than he is about wins and losses.

“As long as I see improvement on the field, whether or not we’re winning or losing, as long as I can see that these kids are doing better this week than they did last week, then our coaches are doing our job,” he said. “We’ve never been necessarily too concerned about the wins or losses, we’re more concerned about developing these kids into good football players and hopefully igniting the passion for the sport.”

Both the peewee and bantam teams will be in Saskatoon for their second game this weekend.

“Hopefully we can perform a little better than we did this week,” Kachkowski said. “That’ll be kind of exciting to go down there and play that game against probably one of the stronger teams in the league, but we’re going to try to get ready for that challenge.”

Both the peewee and bantam teams will play six regular season games this season.
