Melfort Arts Council ready to host first concerts since 2018

The Melfort Arts Council is bringing live music back to the community for the first time in five years.

The last time the Arts Council held a concert was in 2018. The next year saw challenges in organizing performances so none took place.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, it placed all plans for future shows on hiatus.

Fast-forward to this past weekend and the “Launching into the Spotlight” event, which helped highlight the upcoming music that is making its return to the city.

“The last live performances were in 2018,” said Chair of the Melfort Arts Council Joanne Bolen. “The performances we are bringing in are a bit more diverse than what we may have brought in before.”

The first of the live performances hits the CJVR Performing Arts Theatre stage at the Kerry Vickar Centre on Oct 20. Diyet and the Love Soldiers will kick off the first of three concerts.

Ellen Froese and Jack Garton will be making appearances in the new year on Feb. 10 and Apr. 16 respectively.

The launch event was held to celebrate local artists, take a look at what the council has planned and bring art lovers in the northeast together.

Bolen explained that as an organization that supports all forms of art, it is refreshing to explore all avenues again.

“The visual arts, we have always been bringing them in all through COVID. The performing arts have been hard to do.”

In 2020, the council started the process of rebuilding which included working with the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) to host events such as the launch and working to make their digital footprint easier to access.

Bolen said there is a need for volunteers for the upcoming live music events as well as five open board member positions.
