Melfort Capital Projects

Construction season nearly complete as Broadway Avenue South re-opens

Sep 13, 2023 | 4:42 PM

Construction season in the City of Melfort is nearing completion, as one of the community’s biggest capital projects of the year is ready to use.

Broadway Avenue South, the city’s main entrance to the south side of town, has officially re-opened after being closed for the entire summer.

“We’re very happy that the bulk of the construction is completed for the season and roads are open to traffic,” said director of public works, Lydia Steffen.

Steffen added though there are still some minor things to complete such as cleanup, landscaping, signage, painting and a final inspection of each construction site.

“We will follow up with our contractor and our consultants to make sure that those things are looked after, before we deem them as final. So, although it may look as if everything is wrapped up, there’s still a little bit of work to do before the city will be happy that things are finalized,” she explained.

Broadway Avenue South was the largest chunk of work the city had to do for 2023, as 600 metres of new road was reconstructed, with a budget of $1.7 million, which the city still remains in.

Other projects included a local traffic safety initiative for Hatton Ave. and Assiniboia Street, as well as a residential street renewal program on Burrows.

With the city having an ultimate deadline of September 15th, Steffen explained they were happy to have things done a bit earlier as school season is now once again underway.

“Our big priority was to try and complete all construction prior to the start of school, but with any construction, there are many unplanned interruptions, both in our planning and execution phases,” she told northeastNOW.

Now, residents should be able to use their normal routes of travel, instead of the detours down side or gravel roads.

Steffen mentioned that ultimately the construction is done for the better of local citizens, and she believes that was accomplished this time around.

“Our primary goal is to use taxpayer dollars to improve and provide services to the residents, and so there are obviously channels that we follow to make sure that taxpayer dollars are spent in the right areas and I think we’ve done a great job with that,” she said.

“The city follows our strategic plan and I think everything we’ve done kind of aligns with that, and we’re very happy with what we were able to do this year. We had quite a few projects going and the fact that they were all completed or all almost completed, we’re very pleased with what we’ve accomplished.”

NortheastNOW reached out to a handful of local businesses along the road who mimicked a lot of the same comments, which included positivity of its re-opening and the resumed easier access, notes about business not really being affected by the closure, and even some jokes about less dust being created because of the lack of traffic.
