A recent house fire southeast of the Town of Star City has led to a death, according to local fire and RCMP.

The Melfort Fire Department (MFD) was called out on Monday, Sept. 11, shortly before 2 p.m., as they proceeded to battle the blaze for roughly 26 hours.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency and the Tisdale RCMP were on scene before a provincial coroner arrived.

At the time of the fire, an older couple was inside the farm home, with the grandfather able to escape.

Grandmother Theresa Marshall was unable to escape and tragically perished in the fire.

“Tisdale officers assisted with taking statements at the scene as Melfort Fire Department responded to the fire. Investigation determined a resident of the house was missing and fire examiners with the SPSA assumed carriage of the investigation. A deceased individual was later located inside the residence,” said Saskatchewan RCMP Media Relations in a statement sent to northeastNOW.

“MFD responded with Command 221, Rescue 221, Engine 223, and Tanker 221. There was one fatality. An investigation into cause and origin was commenced the next morning by the SPSA, with Melfort Fire there to assist them as they were the lead investigation team. The cause was undetermined,” added the MFD.

A GoFundMe has since been set up in Marshall’s name by a family friend in Darby Wudrich.

Her message read, “I’m fundraising for my family friends who unfortunately, not only lost their family farm home but even worse their beloved matriarch, their mother, Theresa Marshall. In the past week, the Marshall family has had a lot of changes due to the tragic events that happened. I’m hoping we are able to raise enough to give this family time to grieve. My condolences to the Marshall family.”

She is hoping that the fundraiser will be able to cover the memorial service and headstone, as well as just provide basic financial relief.

Donations have totalled $2,000 already. The link to the GoFundMe page can be found here.
