Mustangs pummel Ice Wolves in 2023/24 home opener

The Melfort Mustangs started their 2023/24 SJHL season with a bang, blowing out the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

The Mustangs didn’t take long to excite their home crowd on opening night, scoring a total of six times in the first 14 minutes.

Melfort would lead 8-2 at one point (just six and a half minutes into the second), as they held on for the 8-4 victory.

“It was a fun night and it was a good game for us,” explained new Stang member, Mathieu Pigeon, who scored his first two SJHL goals on the night.

“I like the way we worked down low with our cycle, it was good. We have to work a bit on our defence, but this was a good team effort,” he added.

The Stangs will now aim for a perfect weekend, as they travel to Flin Flon to face the Bombers.

Saturday night will mark Flin Flon’s home opener, as the Bombers are coming off a win of their own, edging out the Hawks in Nipawin 5-3.

Pigeon knows things won’t come as easy on Saturday and that his team will have to be strong in their fundamental play.

“Just crash the net, work hard and get some dirty goals,” he said. “Also, we will have to work on our d-zone, but I think tomorrow we’ll do that and this will work great.”

Another division rival to begin the season means more information and knowledge for the new guys.

Pigeon, being one of them, has heard lots of stories so far and is excited to get his first taste of the zoo.

“I know Flin Flon is a good team and they call it the Zoo, which is new for me. I think we have to get this energy from the bench going there and we will try our best to win,” he told northeastNOW.

“It’s a good team and it’s fun to play there, but we have to be ready. It seems good and we have to get after it during the game.”

Puck drop is slated for 6:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time, as Ben Tompkins will have the call on 105 CJVR, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:15.
