Mintos split opening weekend with Regina

The Prince Albert Mintos picked up two points following their opening weekend against the Regina Pat Canadians at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Mintos and Pat C’s split the weekend doubleheader with Regina taking game one 7-4 on Saturday, and P.A. claiming game two 5-3 on Sunday.

Owen Nelson earned the home star for the Mintos in game one where he potted two goals in the season opener. Konnor Watson and Abinet Klassen also found the back of the night while Carter Cole, Owen Dyck, and Simon Garchinski all collected assists. Meanwhile the Pat C’s had multiple point getters in the game including five multi-point getters.

Game two was a much different tone for P.A. They jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first period with markers from Taite Donkin, Van Taylor, and Jordon Abrametz. However, their sticks went quite in the second allowing Regina to capitalize and score two in the frame.

The Pat C’s ended up tying the game early in the third before P.A. found their groove once again. Raydr Wallington scored the game winner on a point shot for the first goal of his career while Will Whitter sealed the deal with a late short-handed goal.

Mintos Assistant Coach Bryan Swystun reflected on his team’s weekend, saying they started slow but finished strong.

“[Saturday] we were a little flat, it was basically our first game with our full team,” he said. “We had to make some improvements and adjustments so coming into today, we had a different gameplan. I’ll give the boys credit they tried to execute [the gameplan] as best they could and in the third period, to comeback and to score those two goals the way that we did and to take the game back, tilt the ice in our fashion was huge.”

Mintos netminder Brady Holtvogt was between the pipes in both games for P.A., stopping 38 of 44 shots on Saturday and another 27 stops on Sunday.

Jaidyn Shaw and Taylor Tabashniuk each got a game in goal for Regina. Tabashniuk collected the win in game one making 13 stops while Shaw turned aside 30 shots during Sunday’s loss.

The Mintos hit the road for their next contest, heading south to Moose Jaw to take on the Winmar Warriors on Oct. 6. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
