PAGC hands out roughly 3,000 food hampers for Thanksgiving

Thousands of people in and around Prince Albert had a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving thanks to the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC).

They held their food drive last week with roughly 3,000 hampers being handed out. This is the third holiday in a row that PAGC has handed out around 3,000 hampers following their Christmas and Easter drives.

“Especially with the price of groceries going up the way they’re going up, people certainly do look forward to this hamper,” said Betty Marleau, co-organizer of PAGC’s Thanksgiving hamper program.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 people registered for the food drive within the first 24 hours. While Marleau didn’t have exact numbers, she explained that non-Indigenous people were also welcome to register with many taking advantage.

In each hamper was a turkey, ham, a bag of potatoes, and produce. PAGC also put in additional groceries such as pasta and Kraft Dinner.

“It could certainly feed a family for its Thanksgiving supper and then a few meals afterward,” added Marleau.

Meanwhile, Marleau didn’t know how much the PAGC spent on the hampers, though she noted it was a large amount.

“The turkeys were worth over ($75,000) and the hams were probably worth more than that, so you’re looking at $150,000 right there,” she said.

Right now, the expectation is that future food drives will continue to hand out around 3,000 hampers.

Marleau explained that the number could be increased if additional money is put towards or raised for these events.
