Mustangs look to end losing skid, host Terriers to start home-and-home

Oct 27, 2023 | 1:02 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are hoping their first losing streak of the season is a short one, as they look to get off the schneid Friday night when the Yorkton Terriers (who are on a five-game skid of their own) come to town.

Melfort lost back-to-back games this past week, during a home-and-home series at the hands of the Melville Millionaires.

Now, they will face a different Viterra Division opponent, also in a home-and-home series, aiming to be the ones with the brooms in hand, rather than the ones being swept.

According to Stangs’ veteran forward, Hayden Prosofsky, the club has to get back to basics if they want to start another run of success.

“You just got to start playing simple hockey and get back to our game like we were doing the first six games there, but I got all the confidence in the world in this group and we’ll be okay,” he told northeastNOW.

“Just playing together, you got to string together a full three periods of hockey so you come out with the outcome you want, but I’m not too worried about it, we’ve got a good group here and we’ll be ready.”

Prosofsky said it’s always easier to be home when trying to get back on track, which the Mustangs will be on Friday.

He’s also expecting a boost for himself when it comes to the opponent he’s facing, as he’s quite familiar with a couple of members of the opposition.

“It helps anytime you’re at home and you got your home fans on your side with no travel, so we should be ready to go,” Prosofsky added. “I heard that Yorkton is a tough hockey club, it’s a good league, so everybody’s good and there are no nights off in this league. I’ve also got a couple of buddies on that team, so I’m pretty excited and it should be fun.”

Prosofsky played a full season with Quintin Unreiner in 2019-20, as a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes U18 AAA club, while the two also grew up together in Medicine Hat.

They also would have likely faced off against each other in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) for a couple of seasons, as members of the Drumheller Dragons and Calgary Canucks, respectively.

Meanwhile, Prosofsky would have seen Tyson Perkins a handful of times, as Perkins would have been an opponent in multiple different leagues throughout a number of years, as a member of organizations in Lethbridge and Red Deer.

Friday night’s contest between the Mustangs and the Terriers will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.

The rematch (which will be broadcast on CJVR) will then occur on Saturday in Kamsack at 7 p.m., as part of a handful of neutral-site SJHL games this season.
