Mustangs end losing streak, extend Terriers’ to six

Oct 28, 2023 | 2:24 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have cut their first losing streak of the season to just two games, after claiming victory over the Yorkton Terriers on Friday night.

Melfort had previously lost back-to-back contests at the hands of the Melville Millionaires, however, they fared much better against a different Viterra Division opponent.

“I think we came ready to play, we got pucks in, hit them hard, and produced,” said Mustangs’ defenceman, Nolan Roberts. “We popped a couple in the net and the boys had a good game.”

Roberts was on Melfort’s top line on the backend for the first time this season on Friday night and was a physical presence.

He told northeastNOW that he’s expecting a similar game on Saturday when it comes to physicality and that if the Blue and Green are going to come out victorious, then they need to play the same way.

“I don’t think we change anything, we had a rough finish of the game, showed them what kind of team we are, and we responded and let them know what we’re bringing tomorrow,” Roberts added.

“I think we start the exact same way we ended up and show them what’s up… I’m ready for that first shift.”

The second contest of this home-and-home series between these two groups will conclude on Saturday, in Kamsack.

Kamsack will serve as a home game for Yorkton, as one of a handful of neutral-site games in the SJHL this year.

“Kamsack will be great,” explained Roberts. “Bo Eisner has been telling me about the home game for weeks now, so I’m expecting to see a loud Eisner family there and I’m really, really excited to get out there and get a win.”

With a victory, Melfort would begin a new win streak, with their longest of the season being seven (to start the year).

Meanwhile, if defeat came for the Terriers, that would push their losing streak to seven games.

The action between the 10 and 3 Mustangs, and Yorkton, now 3-7-1-1, will begin at 7 p.m., with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 p.m., on CJVR.
