Melfort, Tisdale take the W in 9-aside football quarterfinals

Some familiar names are one step closer to a championship match up as the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association nine-aside football league.

The Melfort’s Comets finished their season with a 6-0 record to Tisdale’s 4-2 in conference one as the two teams crossed over to take on the top teams from conference four with Tisdale taking on the Humboldt Mohawks in Humboldt and and Melfort taking on the Delisie Chargers in Delisie.

Going into the playoffs with a 6-0 record, the Melfort Comets handily won against the Chargers, 43-12 and will now go on the road to take on Shaunavon after their 26-6 win against Indian Head.

Tornadoes head coach, Keenan Carrier, said the Tisdale Tornadoes match against the 6-0 Mohawks was the most exciting match up he’s ever seen.

By the end of the first half, Mohawks were up 28-14 but the Tornadoes were not to be outdone with two touchdowns in the third to tie it up 28-28. Back and forth pushes by the offence brought the score within grabbing distance for either team but it would be Tisdale that would stop Humboldt in its tracks. With a failed touchdown attempt in the last 40 seconds of the game and some movement in the endzone to sacrifice some safety points for Humboldt, the buzzer would sound on a 38-37 Tisdale win.

With plenty of rookies needing some guidance, Carrier said his veteran players have already taken them under their wing.

“We stuck together, we stayed the course and I couldn’t be more happy with that outcome. We made the plays when they mattered, and well the outcome was the outcome and I’m super excited about that.”

The Tornadoes will now move on to take on Lumsden after their runaway win against Esterhazy, 71-14.

Players had an early warning about the possible weather conditions, said Carrier. Being a great football team means learning to play in the cold.

“If you want to be provincial champions at the end of the year, you’re going to be playing on snow, so you better get used to the cold,” he said.

While the loss was exciting for Tisdale, it was a disappointment for Humboldt, said head coach, Eric Anderson, especially for his Grade 12 students for which this will be their last season.

They left it all out on the field, he said, and did everything they asked of them.

“We had a solid group this year. They worked very hard all year long. They improved all the way through. We were playing good football today, but source Tisdale, and that’s what you run into when you get to playoffs.”

All matches will take place with 1 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 4.
