High Scoring Affair

Coyle’s breakout performance pushes Mustangs over Terriers

Nov 19, 2023 | 3:01 PM

The Melfort Mustangs scored eight goals during Saturday night’s three-goal win over the visiting Yorkton Terriers.

All eight of those goals came off the Mustangs’ top line for the majority of the night, as forward David Coyle had a breakout seven-point performance.

“Just when we’re working as a team, not many teams can play us, so as long as we do our part, we’ll get those goals on our chances because we got the skill to finish them off,” he told northeastNOW.

“It felt amazing, finally got a couple of goals after I’ve had a little slump recently, but it’s good to get back in the scoring column and get another win for the team.”

Coyle (three goals, four assists) wasn’t the only Melfort player to have a heck of a game on the stat sheet, as Ryan Duguay (three goals, two assists), Leith Olafson (three assists), Aidyn Hutchinson (two goals), and Chase Friedt-Mohr (two assists) all had multiple points on the night.

For the Blue and Green, the game represented the third time they reached the eight-goal plateau this season and the first time they’ve scored six or more in a game since Sept. 29.

It also came just 24 hours after they failed to score at least twice for the first time this year, after losing 2-1 to the Nipawin Hawks, despite throwing 44 shots on net.

The Stangs had 43 shots during this particular matchup, as the trio of Coyle, Duguay, and Hutchinson (who were paired up after Mathieu Pigeon left the game with an injury) got seven more in the net on one less shot.

“I thought they got good skill, we can find each other and make plays, and all three of us can finish off chances pretty well, so as long as you set it up, they should go in back to the net,” Coyle added.

The victory, which didn’t come without adversity, as Melfort was down by two goals on three separate occasions, evened up the season series between these two clubs at two wins a piece.

The Mustangs, who didn’t have their first lead till there were only 12 minutes and 41 seconds left in the game, and only allowed nine shots against in the final 35 minutes and 54 seconds of the contest, also salvaged their parent-billet weekend with the win.

“It’s great, the parents do a lot for us throughout the years of hockey and stuff, so it’s great to show the support and get a big win for them,” Coyle explained. “We stuck with it and just reset before the third period and came out flying and they couldn’t hold us back.”

After the match, the Stangs held their annual Calcutta Shootout to cap off the family weekend.

Kaleb Binner was the big winner on the night (shown above getting mobbed by his teammates), while Ty Thornton and Hayden Prosofsky finished second and third respectively, and Kristian Coombs won the goalie pool.

The Blue and Green will now play four straight games against the three teams ahead of them in the standings, which begins Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against the Battlefords North Stars in the Northern Lights Palace.
