CRIME WATCH

Tisdale community members looking to launch neighbourhood crime watch

Nov 20, 2023 | 12:00 PM

Residents of Tisdale have a chance to hear from those wanting to start a new neighbourhood crime watch.

An information session is taking place on Wednesday and those interested in learning more or being a part of the new group are welcome to attend.

According to Roy Skoglund, who is helping to organize the crime watch group, it’s being done to address concerns about crime in the small community.

“We’ve just seen a rise in criminal crime activity going on and we do realize that the police can’t be there everywhere all the time,” he said. “If one person, two person, 10 people all see the same thing going on and they start talking, then that’s just how it starts.”

Speaking at the event will be Doug Fehr, the chairperson for the Battlefords Citizens on Patrol program.

The local group is run by volunteers who work with Community Safety Officers and Battlefords RCMP as an extra set of eyes in the community.

Fehr said he will present a guide on the steps needed to start a local crime watch and to prepare for any obstacles along the way.

“There’s ways to go about it that will ensure the group is more successful,” he said. “There’s ways to go about doing it that will save you some time and potential hiccups and roadblocks. So that’s essentially what I’d like to go through.”

He added that it’s critical to have a core group of at least four people when starting a crime watch group. It’s also important to have support and relationships with local RCMP, police and the municipality.

Skoglund said an RCMP representative is scheduled to attend the information session. For now, he’s just spreading the word in the hopes of getting a good turnout.

“The more people we get out to this information night, the better, and then we can get some feedback from there and then feedback from Doug.”

The information session for the Crime Watch happens Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Tisdale Civic Centre.
