Final trip to Flon

Bombers double up Mustangs in third meeting of the season

The Melfort Mustangs second-half comeback fell short on Wednesday night, as they were doubled up by the Flin Flon Bombers by a score of 4-2.

Just over 30 minutes into the hockey game, the Mustangs faced a 3-0 deficit and were getting heavily outshot by the Bombers. The shots were 26-7 in the first period and Flin Flon led by one goal.

Fortunately, Melfort was able to give themselves a bit of hope, as they capitalized twice on a five-minute powerplay later on in the second period.

The Stangs then had a full period plus to even the score at three but ultimately failed to get it done, as a Justin Lies empty-net goal with just 18 seconds left served as the nail in the coffin.

“You come here and it’s a hard atmosphere to play in but the biggest thing we said before the game is you got to weather the storm, so that’s as simple as you chipping pucks in, attacking the D, and hard F1, but I feel like we didn’t execute that in the first and ultimately, the game didn’t go our way,” explained assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“In the third period, it could’ve gone either way, I thought we were in at the whole game, but just got an

And after a final frame that maybe didn’t go their way officiating-wise (just the one man-advantage for Melfort all game, while the Flin Flon had six, including three in the final period) the Mustangs are likely excited to host the Bombers three times in the new year.

Not only that, but Wednesday wrapped up a tough stretch for the Stangs, as it was their fourth game in a row against an organization higher than them in the standings, as they split it evenly with a pair of wins and a pair of losses.

“I feel like the refs put the whistles away but nothing you can do and you just got to battle through it but we didn’t come on top,” Scherger added.

“I thought these four games we played hard, we played heavy, the boys showed some character, and that’s awesome. Now, we just get ready for Notre Dame on the weekend and we’ll be good to go.”

Mustangs’ netminder James Venne did his best to keep his team in it, stopping 49 of 52 on the night.

The Blue and Green will now shift their focus to Friday, as the Hounds will travel to Melfort for a 7:30 p.m. matchup at the Northern Lights Palace.
