Location finalized for Nipawin’s first dog park, fundraising needed for fencing

The Town of Nipawin is close to getting its first official dog park.

The Nipawin Dog Park Board has partnered with the Nipawin Lions Club to turn Lions Park into a fenced-in, off-leash paradise for people’s furry friends.

Nancy Graham, board chair of the Nipawin Dog Park Board, told northeastNOW the park is something both groups have been trying to get up and running.

“Hopefully, we can get their goal and our goal, which are the same, happening a little quicker,” she said.

Originally, there were talks with the town about creating it in Walleye Park. However, it would only be temporary as the space would still be available for anyone who wanted to develop it.

Graham said the initial disappointment turned back to excitement as soon as the board partnered with the Lions Club. She added the new location is also free of any foxtail plant which is very harmful to dogs.

“It’s just a better location,” Graham said.

Around three-quarters of the park will be turned into a dog park. It will include a staging area and separate sections for small and big dogs. The Lions Club still has plans to turn the other part of the park into a playground.

There’s a belief that once all the work on the park is done, it will help deter crime from the area.

“We’ll have lighting, there will be foot traffic… a lot more people using the park,” Graham said.

The Dog Park Board is now trying to raise the funds to get the area fenced. Graham believes they’ll need to collect around $40,000.

“The timeline really depends on community support and how much fundraising we can get done,” she added.

Her hope is to have it open to the public before the start of next winter.
