New-look Mustangs go for six in a row, against Millionaires

Dec 12, 2023 | 2:23 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will go for their sixth consecutive victory on Tuesday when they visit the Melville Millionaires.

The Mustangs will be in tough, however, as they’ve lost their previous two meetings against the Mills.

Melfort hopes to use its recent big splash in the trade market, as a boost to get over that hump.

The Stangs acquired Yorkton Terriers captain, Clay Sleeva on Sunday, less than 24 hours after beating them 4-3 on Saturday on their home ice.

Meanwhile, Melville will likely also have someone new in their lineup in former Mustang Hudson Norris.

Norris was also sent away just prior to the league trade freeze and went to the Millionaires for a player development fee.

The Edmonton product will see his former team for the first time tonight.

Tuesday’s contest also marks the third last game for the Blue and Green, prior to their nearly three weeks away from the ice during the Christmas break.

The Mustangs hope to ride into the new year as the league’s second-best team, which is where they currently sit as of this moment.

During Melfort’s recent winning ways, they’ve leapfrogged both the Humboldt Broncos and the Battlefords North Stars.

While the Stangs have played the most games out of any team so far this season, they have a record of 20-9-2, good for 42 points.

Humboldt and Battlefords are deadlocked at 41 points each, however, they have three and two games in hand respectively.

The Broncos maintain a record of 19-6-2-1, while the North Stars sit with a 19-7-2-1 mark.

For the Blue and Green, Tuesday’s trip to Melville will mark their second and final visit to the Bank, while the Millionaires will come to the Northern Lights Palace for the last time on Feb. 23.

Tonight’s contest goes at 7 p.m., with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m. on CJVR.
