Salvation Army Christmas hamper season

Melfort Salvation Army handing out almost 300 Christmas Hampers this year

The local Salvation Army continues to help those in need this holiday season.

Family Christmas hampers have been delivered in Melfort and Tisdale, and couples and singles will receive theirs through Friday.

The hampers contain food items, gift cards, and toys for the kids.

Melfort Salvation Army auxiliary captain Glenna Cryderman told northeastNOW that the need has been strong this season, especially with food prices and other costs becoming burdensome for many.

“In Melfort we have, I think it was a hundred and sixty-some hampers, and in Tisdale, we were a hundred and ten,” Cryderman said. She added that Tisdale’s numbers are way up compared to last year, while Melfort was relatively stable.

There may be a reason why Tisdale’s need was greater this season than in years past.

“We’re the food bank in Tisdale so people are far more aware of what we do, and so I think that may have had an effect in Tisdale since we’re the food bank there,” Cryderman explained.

There have also been other people and organizations handing out hampers in Melfort, and that may be why the number of Salvation Army hampers in the city is similar to previous years.

Cryderman said donations are still accepted, with any donation staying in the community in which it’s donated.

Families were allowed to shop for their kids’ gifts this year for the first time, and Cryderman said that was very well received.

“Thank you to both Melfort and Tisdale communities for their generosity and their support of the Salvation Army,” Cryderman said. “It’s amazing how people have come together and supported us.”
