Storage shed fire

Nipawin storage shed fire extinguished

Jan 3, 2024 | 3:45 PM

Fire crews in Nipawin were busy Wednesday with two fire calls.

The first was a report of smoke Wednesday afternoon on the northwest side of town, which ended up being a controlled burn that had not been reported.

The first structure fire of the year was reported an hour later off Highway 35, as 4 apparatus and 16 crew members were called to a storage shed fire.

The fire department said on social media that staff had hit the fire with an extinguisher through a small hole in the back wall, which likely slowed the fire enough to keep it from getting too far into the roof.

The crews that first arrived on the scene were then able to bring the fire under control.

The social media release said it shows the importance of having a portable fire extinguisher and knowing how to properly use one.

The fire department also gave kudos to the staff for not entering the building. They said the fire would have quickly overwhelmed the staff members.
