Somers named Sask Player of December

Melfort Mustangs forward, Zac Somers has been honoured as the December Saskatchewan Player of the Month by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Melfort native played in all eight of the Mustangs games during the final month of the 2023 calendar year, putting up 12 points in the process.

During those contests, his team was perfect, as they’ve now vaulted into second place in the league standings.

Somers has been consistent when he’s actually in Melfort’s lineup, registering 28 points in 21 games.

The 2004-born product has already missed 13 of the Mustangs’ 34 games this season, having only failed to register a point on four separate occasions when he’s suited up.

During the month of December, the University of Maine commit racked up five goals and seven assists.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs organization also recently named their Players of the Month for December, with their three-star awards.

Between the three of them, they had nine goals and 16 assists, good for a total of 25 points.

Aidyn Hutchinson was given the first star for his efforts, putting up 12 points in just seven games. Overall, the 2003-born forward had five goals and seven assists.

As for the second star, it went to defenceman Chase Friedt-Mohr who also participated in seven contests. During that span, the 20-year-old veteran had three goals and five assists.

And finally, rookie Brayden Westerlund took home the third star. The 2005-born forward nearly quadrupled his point total during the month, putting up five points (one goal and four assists) to increase his total to seven on the season.
