Mustangs hope to continue long win streak against Ice Wolves

Jan 5, 2024 | 3:30 PM

The Melfort Mustangs return to the ice Friday night, for the first time in nearly three weeks.

Melfort will head to La Ronge to face the Ice Wolves for their first game after the Christmas break and of 2024.

“The break was really good, it was a nice little chance to reset and recover,” said defenceman Chase Friedt-Mohr. “It was good to spend some time with family and friends and relax and just have kind of a reset button here going forward.”

The Mustangs have entered the New Year on an eight-game win streak, after going perfect in the month of December.

That stretch was aided after their only loss, which came in overtime against the Hawks, had to be forfeited by Nipawin due to an ineligible player.

“It feels really good, I’ve never really seen that before, it’s kind of weird seeing that pop up there,” Friedt-Mohr added. “It’s awesome, guys are playing really well, even that game that we lost I thought we still played pretty well, well I guess won now but anyway, it feels really good.”

Melfort is hoping they can roll over that confidence and outstanding play, despite the long break, as they’ll likely have to deal with a bit of rust.

Thankfully, they’ll be competing against a team they’ve already beaten three times this season.

“Obviously, the first game or two is gonna be a little scrambly, we’ve been away from our game, been away from systems and all that, and can’t just flip a switch and be back here, so it’s going to take a little bit of work but I think after a little bit here we’ll get rolling again,” Friedt-Mohr added.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Mel Hegland Uniplex, with the Suncrest College pregame show starting at 7:15 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
