Melfort looking for new fire chief and city treasurer

Melfort is in the market for a couple of high-profile employees.

The city is hiring a new fire chief/emergency program coordinator, as well as a city treasurer.

Melfort’s new treasurer will be responsible for managing the city’s finances, budgeting, taxes, utility bills, accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Trevor Wowk resigned Nov. 3.

Meanwhile, former Fire Chief Shaun Stewart was let go from his position in November, with the city refusing to discuss what led to his departure.

“These vacancies present an exciting opportunity for individuals looking to make a big impact in the community,” City Manager Adam Homes told northeastNOW.

The fire chief/emergency program coordinator will look after Melfort’s paid on-call firefighter team that answers calls in the city and surrounding areas.

Homes said the new fire chief role has changed since Stewart’s departure a couple of months ago.

“I think there’s a bit more focus on firefighting and the emergency management program,” Homes said. “That position previously had some other duties as well, but we’ve…[focused more] on emergency management planning and firefighting.”

The new fire chief would help compile policies and procedures for types of emergencies that could affect a community, such as a train derailment, or lengthy power outages.

Homes said the positions will remain open until the ‘right’ candidate is hired, but he hopes that doesn’t take long.
