The Nipawin Hawks have announced the signing of the AAA U18 Airdrie Bisons Captain Adrien Fox.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club made the announcement Monday that the 5-10l forward will come from Alberta and join the Hawks next season. Nipawin’s associate general manager said Fox has many attributes the Hawks want in players.

“He’s their captain, he’s a leader, he’s smooth, really good kid, really good family,” Dana Dirks mentioned. “He’s the quarterback of the power-play on the backend, since we inked him, he’s had four goals and two assists in his last two games. Over a point a game playing on a really good team.”

Fox has 10 goals and 17 assists in 24 games this season in the U18 Alberta Elite Hockey League. Last year with his hometown U18 Okotoks Oilers AAA program he scored six goals and added a couple of assists.

Fox’s older brother Nathan spent a year in Melville with the Millionaires last season, Dirks said the Fox family feels the SJHL is the best path for Adrien’s junior hockey destination.

“I think there is some trust there on the family’s behalf on what we’re doing in Nipawin and they like what they are seeing and hearing. They made that choice and we’re real happy with it,” Dirks said.

Bernauer and Buckberger win weekly awards

Two 20-year-old Saskatoon born forwards of the Hawks were named in the SJHL Player of the Week awards on Monday.

Alex Bernauer was named the Forward of the Week thanks to his four goals and two assists in three games last week, two of which were Nipawin victories. He now has eight goals and 15 assists in 22 games since being acquired from the North American Hockey League.

Braxton Buckberger picked up his third weekly award of the season being named the Player of the Week. He had a pair of goals and four helpers in the opening week of the 2024 calendar year. He leads the team with 15 goals (tied with Finley Radloff) and 28 assists in 35 games played.

The Hawks will travel to Flin Flon Friday for their next game.
