The Humboldt Broncos are making some moves just ahead of the league’s annual trade deadline.

Hughes to Grand Prairie

The Broncos have swapped rookies with the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

Spencer Hughes will be departing Humboldt in exchange for Oakley McIlwain.

McIlwain, a 2005-born defenceman from Lloydminster has four assists through 15 games this season.

“Oakley’s a good-sized rangy D-man that can skate and play on both sides of the puck very well. He’s young, already established a strong pedigree to his game and has a ton of upside,” said Broncos’ head coach and general manager, Scott Barney in a press release.

“He’s the former AAA defenceman of the year. He’s a player we’re very excited to build into this year and for future success.”

During his final year of AAA hockey last season with the Lloydminster Bobcats U18 program, he led the league in goals by a defenceman with 11 and finished third in points with 31.

McIlwain was also drafted in the 2020 WHL draft, 148th overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Meanwhile, Hughes, another 2005-born player, put up 14 points (four goals and 10 assists) for the Green and Gold this season as a forward.

Martin to Weyburn

Humboldt has also sent away 2006-born defenceman Simon Martin.

Martin will go to the Weyburn Red Wings system, in exchange for future considerations.

The Lumsden product was the Broncos’ first-round pick in 2022, just one selection behind last season’s rookie of the year, Riley Ashe.

Martin is currently the captain of the Tisdale Trojans in the SMAAAHL, where he’s registered 18 points in 28 games.

He also got called up to Humboldt for four games last year, collecting one assist in the process.

Weekend Deals

The Broncos also made a pair of trades this past weekend when they sent Noah Asmundson to the Niverville Nighthawks of the MJHL and acquired Jacob Strizzi from the North York Rangers of the OJHL.

Asmundson is a 2005-born forward and had just one point with the Broncos this year, while Strizzi is also a 2005-born forward, but has produced 33 points with the Rangers.
