Kinistino ready for week-filled hockey celebration

Jan 12, 2024 | 12:39 PM

The Town of Kinistino is ready to host the 16th edition of Hockey Day in Saskatchewan this coming week, so much so that they’ve seemed to turn it into Hockey Week.

The community of just under 700 has been preparing since they received the news last October, as they will be hosting numerous events throughout the week, including double digits in hockey games.

“We wanted to try and include everyone, we have lots of young hockey players that maybe started their minor hockey in Kinistino but have kind of developed and moved on to double-A, triple-A, and junior, so just trying to make them a part of our hockey week,” Kinistino Minor Hockey Association President Randy Hanson told northeastNOW.

The week kicks off on Tuesday (Jan. 16) with an all-female matchup as the U18 AA Northeast Aces clash with the Prince Albert Foxes at 7:30 p.m.

The hockey will then roll over into Wednesday and Thursday with PJHL action on Jan. 17 as the Carrot River Outback Thunder take on the Prince Albert Timberjaks before the U18 Kinistino Tigers go against the Carrot River Loggers on Jan. 18.

Meanwhile, Friday (Jan. 19) will be the only day there is no hockey, as the community centre will host a banquet with guest speaker, Jay Onrait from TSN’s Sportscentre.

A cabaret will follow with live music from the Kings and Renegades, whose one band member is from Kinistino.

As for Saturday, which will serve as the official 2024 Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, it features four hockey matchups from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

The U7 Kinistino Tigers will begin the day against the Tisdale Red Ramblers, followed by the U9 Kinistino Tigers versus the St. Brieux Nordiques. After that, the female U18 AAA Prince Albert Bears will take on the Regina Rebels, and the male U18 AAA Prince Albert Mintos will battle the North Battleford North Stars.

Finally, the best hockey of the weekend will arrive in the form of SJHL action, as the La Ronge Ice Wolves take on the Nipawin Hawks.

Then, the week will conclude on Sunday, starting with a pancake breakfast and faith church service.

The day will also include the U11 Kinistino Tigers against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, the U13 Kinistino Tigers taking on the Kelvington Rams, the male U15 AA Northeast Wolfpack battling with the Prince Albert Venice House Pirates, a Kinistino Skating Club showcase, and the Kinistino Sr. Tigers clashing against the Nipawin Knights.

“The town, minor hockey and the rink board, everybody has been working together as a whole, as one, and as a community to pull off this event,” Hanson added

“I just really want to thank all the volunteers and the Hockey Day committee for all the hard work going into it, we’ve become a pretty good team… I just hope everything goes off without a hitch and we have a great event.”
