Hawks visit Millionaires Sunday in lone SJHL game

Jan 14, 2024 | 11:00 AM

The Nipawin Hawks will play their lone game of the week on Sunday evening in Melville against the Millionaires.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club hasn’t played since Jan. 6 when the Hawks beat La Ronge 8-3 at the ‘Cage.’ Nipawin was supposed to go play Flin Flon on Friday, but the game was postponed due to the extremely cold temperatures. Nipawin Head Coach Tad Kozun said the start to 2024 has been slower while other teams catch up in games played.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to it,” he said Sunday morning. “We had to adjust our schedule a little bit with our practice and that kind of thing, but we’re definitely looking forward to getting back on the ice tonight.”

This will be the third meeting of six this season between the two clubs. Nipawin has 4-2 and 6-1 victories over the Millionaires already this year.

The Hawks will also have Tre Fouquette back in the lineup after spending the first half of the season with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League. Kozun said he’s excited to welcome back the 19-year-old defenceman.

“It’s not like we are teaching a new guy everything. Obviously, he was a big part of our team last year and we know he’s going to be a big part again, so we are looking forward to having him back in the lineup tonight,” Kozun said.

Nipawin has watched the team creep up on them in the SJHL standings as the schedule has been lighter to start 2024. The Hawks remain in fifth place, but Estevan and Kindersley are just two points behind while the Millionaires are just four points back but have five fewer games played than the Hawks in the final playoff spot. Kozun said the final 21 games won’t feature many nights off, if any.

“We want to keep building off the last three games that we have put together coming out of the break. We’ve got to continue to go down that road if we want to get to where we want to go,” he said.

Faceoff is at 6:00 p.m. from the CN Community Centre in Melville. The game will be broadcast on 750 Beach Radio beginning at 5:45 p.m.
