Humboldt Chamber welcomes new executive director

Jan 17, 2024 | 5:25 PM

The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director.

Sarah McInnis has started her new job at the chamber, following the retirement of long-time executive director Brent Fitzpatrick.

McInnis told northeastNOW that being involved in the community drew her interest in the role.

“I am very passionate about community, and in this job you’re representing such a large number of business members, so it’s really a role that’s super kind of hands-on involved in the community, and that really was attractive to me,” McInnis said.

In a press release, Chamber President Tammy Ward said “[w]e are very pleased to have Sarah join our team. I can’t wait for our business community to meet her. Her experience provides an opportunity for the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce to continue our focus of bringing value to our members, I look forward to working with Sarah in the coming months.”

McInnis, who is originally from the Tisdale area, comes to the Humboldt area after several years working in the Legislative Assembly in Prince Edward Island, a job which she said involved a lot of community engagement and legislative duties. McInnis then had her first child and moved back home to the Humboldt area, where her parents had settled.

She told northeastNOW one of her first goals as executive director is to improve engagement with Chamber members and the community as a whole.

“I think sometimes there can be a disconnect between chambers and the general community, and even their members,” McInnis explained. “So we really want to work on that communication, advertising events that our business members are putting on, and just really making sure that the chamber’s presence is felt, as well as our support.”

McInnis said the Board of Directors is currently undertaking the strategic planning process, so there will be a new direction to come, which she described as “very exciting for the Humboldt and District Chamber,”

The position became available after the retirement of Brent Fitzpatrick who took over the role back in 2018. McInnis said his legacy will be a challenge to meet.

“My predecessor was here for several years and did a great job getting the chamber where it is today. I’m certainly feeling a little bit of pressure to… fill those shoes, but has passed on some great advice and I have an amazing board behind me,” McInnis explained.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to work.”
