NESD schools to close for second time due to teachers’ strike

The North East School Division (NESD) remains at-the-ready amid the job action by local teachers.

The Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF) announced Thursday that the next round of job action will be a second one-day provincewide strike on Monday, Jan. 22.

The previous strike was held on Jan. 16, with teachers picketing at local MLA offices and other locations across the province.

“The North East School Division commitment continues to focus on student well-being and safety,” said NESD Director of Education Stacy Lair.

In light of the STF announcement of further strikes on Monday, schools will be closed that day, and all forms of extracurricular activities will be canceled. That includes practices, games, clubs, and groups.

Lair said they will ensure they have communication open to all parents through email, text messages, Edsby, their website, and social media. Despite that, some families missed the NESD’s announcements about Tuesday’s strike.

“If you were missing out (on the announcement), we ask those families to go to their school, or contact their school… and we’ll update some contact information or perhaps some of our settings for them for notifications,” Lair explained.

She thanked everyone for their patience and said they appreciate non-teaching staff and families as the process continues.

STF president Samantha Becotte said in a news release Thursday that the federation is “seeking long-term commitments from government on critical issues impacting students, including class size and complexity – not patchwork pilot projects that don’t fix the systemic issues in our schools.”

The provincial government has repeatedly said they will not include class size and complexity in contract negotiations with teachers.
