Mustangs’ poor third period effort results in loss to Bruins

Jan 21, 2024 | 9:25 AM

The Melfort Mustangs just didn’t seem to have it on the second night of a back-to-back in Estevan as they fell 3-1 to the Bruins on Saturday night.

In what was another tight affair between the two SJHL clubs, as the game was once again scoreless after one period, and then tied at one after two, it was the hometown team who pulled away with the victory.

Despite it being the Black and Gold’s fourth game in five nights, they looked like the team with a lot more energy, especially in the final period.

“Our compete and work ethic were bad, we were soft and scared, and we just didn’t get the job done. The second game on the weekend can be tough, but you got to play simple and play hard, and we didn’t have it all tonight,” explained assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“We came out in the third flat-footed and they took advantage of it.”

After a 1-1 deadlock through 40 minutes, it was Estevan who scored twice in the final period, one of which was an empty net as the Stangs had seven powerplays and only scored once.

The Blue and Green will next play in Notre Dame on Thursday, as they continue their season-long road trip.

“We’re gonna have to compete and have some work ethic, Monday and Tuesday will be work days, get back to the drawing board, and go play a full sixty minutes,” added Scherger.

“Obviously, you come down on these trips to get four points, but you come away with two and nothing you can do now.”

James Venne stopped 18 of 20, while Cam Hrdlicka saved 17 of 18, as Melfort only had one shot in the final frame.
