Nipawin centennial delayed

Nipawin centennial celebration premature; delayed until 2025

The Town of Nipawin’s 100th Birthday Celebration will not be held this year after all.

The good news is that the celebration isn’t being cancelled – only delayed.

General Manager of Community Services Derek Seckinger told northeastNOW there is a very good reason to postpone the event.

“History shows that… Nipawin was not started until 1925, not 1924,” Seckinger explained. “It was squatters that had moved to the townsite of Nipawin, and CP (Canadian Pacific) Rail actually owned the land.”

Seckinger said the information about the incorrect centennial date was revealed by local historian and former mayor Oren Robinson, who spoke at Monday’s council meeting.

“We are going to have the 100th birthday celebration next year, in 2025,” Seckinger added.

Director of Parks and Recreation Chelsea Corrigan said CP Rail conducted the public sale of lots in Nipawin in March of 1925, making $40,000 during the sale.

“In 1925 is when we were incorporated into village status,” said Corrigan, who explained that planning for the birthday celebration hasn’t started yet.

The celebration was to be held the same time as the street fair this year. While the birthday party is delayed until the next year, the street fair will continue as planned.

Corrigan said the street fair offers a number of activities for families and other local residents including food truck vendors, entertainment, music, bouncy castles, and more.

The street fair will be held in downtown Nipawin July 14, the Sunday before the Nipawin Exhibition.
