New school in Carrot River

Carrot River Valley School now open

Feb 2, 2024 | 5:42 PM

Carrot River’s new school has officially opened its doors.

The Carrot River Valley School welcomed students from Grades 5 through 12 earlier this week.

The building will eventually house students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, but the K to 4 students are staying in the old elementary school until September.

Principal Sari Carson told northeastNOW the new facility is a wonder.

“It feels fantastic. This has been a long time coming as we’ve watched it go up right before our eyes.”

Carson explained that everything at the new facility is state-of-the-art.

The new facility utilizes a lot of natural light to make the building brighter than even Carson anticipated. She said there are upgrades in all departments.

The gym facilities are not quite complete but once they are, the school will have two fully functioning gymnasiums – one of which can also become a performing arts theatre.

“It’s got dual purpose so for any sort of performances or community events or grad, things like that,” Carson explained. “With the raised seating it’s just going to be phenomenal hosting functions there.”

The library is located on the school’s second floor. The kindergarten has its own entrance and bathroom inside, and an early learning play area outdoors. Carson also touted the Practical & Applied Arts and Industrial Art labs in the facility, which can lead to increased opportunities post-high school.

“I think the biggest thing (the new school) means for our community is continued high-quality educational opportunities right here in our community,” Carson said.

“Knowing that (students) have a state-of-the-art building and resources right at their fingertips now moving forward for generations to come, that just feels pretty awesome.”

Carson said she’s excited that it’s becoming a K to 12 school in the fall as it will allow for many cross-curricular and cross-grade activities and support.
