Mustangs to wrap up season-long road trip in Weyburn

Feb 6, 2024 | 1:19 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will conclude their season-long six-game road trip tonight when they battle the Weyburn Red Wings.

Tuesday night will mark the Mustangs’ first visit to Crescent Point Place this season, as the two previous matchups occurred in Melfort, back on Oct. 6 and 7.

The Stangs won those two contests, both of which were one-goal margins.

Now, coming off a dominant 5-0 win over Nipawin this past Saturday, in their only game of the week, the Blue and Green hope to extend their win streak to three and come out of their road trip with a 4-2 mark.

“Monday, we had a little practice and worked on our special teams of course,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger. “We gotta get down there and just have one of those road wins right, grease it out, play with grit and just play simple and come out on top.”

Special teams will be top of mind, as the Mustangs’ powerplay was 0 for 7 against the Hawks on Saturday, however, their penalty kill was a perfect 7 of 7.

Any advantage they can gain to become victorious will be key, as they’ve also now been recognized as a top 20 team in the country, according to the CJHL rankings.

Another factor that will keep them on that list, as they also chase the Battlefords North Stars for second place in the SJHL standings, is the continued play of their number-one goaltender.

Reigning SJHL Goalie of the Month, James Venne, just followed up his impressive month of January by beginning February with a bang.

The Saskatoon netminder picked up his third shutout in the last month, in that 5-0 blanking of his club rival Hawks over the weekend, earning himself Co-Goalie of the Week honours.

“MVP is all I gotta say,” added Scherger.

Venne had 29 saves in his team’s lone game of the week, and so did Flin Flon Bombers’ netminder Kenneth Marquart, who ironically also had his shutout against Nipawin, which came on Friday.

The opening faceoff for Tuesday night’s clash between Melfort and the Red Wings in Weybrun is set for 7 p.m.

The Suncrest College pregame show begins at 6:45 p.m. on 105 CJVR, as Ben Tompkins has the call.
