Mustangs dig early, fall short against Broncos

Feb 10, 2024 | 1:08 PM

The Melfort Mustangs got off to their worst start of the season on Friday night, as they gave up four first-period goals for the first time all year.

With Melfort digging themselves an early hole, it was all Humboldt Broncos the rest of the way, resulting in a 5-1 final.

“I just don’t think we competed hard enough tonight, they out hit us and they just flat out seemed like they wanted it more than us tonight,” explained Mustangs defenceman, Chase Friedt-Mohr.

“We’ll take this game in, we’ll learn from our mistakes, we’ll break it down, every guy will pitch in and think of what they can do better, and then we just go into Saturday’s game with a positive mindset.”

Friday night’s match was the SaskTel Game of the Month, so there was a little bit more hype and fans surrounding the Palace.

Friedt-Mohr told northeastNOW that it didn’t play a factor in the result, however.

“I think the boys if anything were pretty excited about it, I guess we just weren’t ready to go from puck drop and they were tonight.”

The two clubs will now travel to Humboldt on Saturday night for the sixth and final matchup of the season.

The contest will be an extremely important one for the Stangs as the Broncos lead the season series 3-2 and are now just one point behind them for third place in the SJHL standings.

According to Friedt-Mohr, special teams and defensive zone coverages will be top of mind and of the utmost importance, if the Blue and Green are to come out on top.

“They did a good job penalty killing and getting in the shot lanes, but we had some good looks and we felt like we had a few that could’ve gone in. We outshot them, we had our chances on the special teams, but just a couple of plays we forced and that’s kind of the difference,” said Friedt-Mohr on his group’s 1 for 7 man advantage.

“Net front coverage comes down to communication, like who’s got who kind of thing, so that’s just kind of a mental error in front there, that’s just a system almost breakdown that we we had there and we got to watch video on it and figure something out.”

Game time is 7 p.m. from the Elgar Petersen Arena, with the Suncrest College pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m.
