Diamond North Credit Union donates $50,000 toward Nipawin Heliport project

The Heliport Project in Nipawin has received another fundraising boost.

Diamond North Credit Union presented the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission (TLDPC) with a $50,000 donation to go toward the construction of the heliport at the Nipawin Hospital.

That project is expected to begin this spring.

Diamond North CEO Colleen Harmatiuk told northeastNOW they were pleased to make the donation. She said the organization was aware for several years that the TLDPC was fundraising for the project.

“From that time on we had been allocating part of our Community Investment Fund, or we call it our Community Enrichment Fund, where we set aside a percentage of our profits every year to give back to the community,” Harmatiuk explained. “So we had been aware that this was coming and wanted to make sure that we were just allocating some of the funds that we have so that when it came time to make a donation we could make a substantial donation.”

Harmatiuk said everyone in the region has been supportive of the project.

“Any time you can save time when you’re treating acute care patient, that matters,” explained Harmatiuk. She said having the heliport in Nipawin to service the region will make a huge difference.

Having the service saves lives said Harmatiuk, and those minutes saved are precious. For Diamond North Credit Union to be able to have an opportunity to be part of the project means a lot to them.

Harmatiuk said Diamond North is a proud supporter in all of the communities they serve, and their employees in green shirts are known to volunteer their time and service to help make the communities a better place.

“Volunteering (and) community enrichment (are) really important to our organization,” said Harmatiuk.

In an email to northeastNOW, the Twin Lakes District Planning Committee said the fundraising project has raised approximately $500,000 thus far.

The project is expected to cost approximately $750,000.
