Feb 13, 2024 | 3:55 PM

Melfort Mustangs’ player Zac Somers has been named the SJHL’s Forward of the Week.

Somers, a Melfort native, registered six points this past week, in three games played.

The NCAA Div I commit scored a goal in every game he suited up for in the last seven days, adding two assists in one and a single helper in another.

While his club only came out victorious in one of the three contests, his teammates understand his value to their success.

“He’s been a huge part of our team all year and we’re lucky to have him on our team,” Mustangs’ forward Kaleb Binner told northeastNOW. “He’s been great offensively and great defensively, so he’s been great for us recently, and I hope he continues that the rest of the year.”

Somers is currently on a six-game point streak, finding the back of the net in five of those six contests.

The future University of Maine Black Bear also has a point in 15 of his last 18 matches. In one of those games in which he failed to register a point, his group was shut out.

On Tuesday, which was Melfort’s only win of the week, Somers had three points, a goal and an assist, all of which came in the first period, as they squeaked out a 6-5 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings.

Meanwhile, over the weekend (Friday and Saturday) against the Humboldt Broncos, the 2004-born scored the only goal of the game for the Stangs in their 5-1 loss at home.

The 5-10, 155-pounder also scored the Blue and Green’s first goal on the road, while adding an apple later on, as his organization’s comeback effort fell just short, resulting in a 6-4 defeat.

Through just 31 games played this season, Somers has 16 goals and 25 assists, good for 41 points.
