Third Straight Defeat

Mustangs clinch playoff berth despite loss to Bombers

Feb 15, 2024 | 9:28 AM

The Melfort Mustangs suffered their third loss in a row on Wednesday night, as they fell to the Flin Flon Bombers 3-0.

All three of the Mustangs’ defeats have come against the top three teams in the league, as Melfort has slid to fourth place in the SJHL standings.

“I thought we came out a little slow and then got going and then the third period kind of just fell off again. I think we’re right in that game and had a pretty good chance to win if we had played a complete 60,” explained Melfort forward, Zac Somers.

“I think we took some good steps forward, obviously, we’re not quite where we want to be, so I think we just got to keep progressing and keep doing the little things to get out of this slump.”

While the game marked only the second time that the Stangs have been shut out all season, they did get 33 shots on net, as Harmon Laser-Hume displayed some of his best work.

That can be taken as a slight positive, as the Blue and Green felt they had good looks, which is something they’ll need this weekend on the road in Estevan and Weyburn.

“I think we’ve had some real good looks, but obviously we couldn’t get them to go. You put up that many shots on a pretty good goalie over there, you just got to find a way to get the puck to go in the net,” Somers added.

“We got one more practice on Thursday, so we’ll work on some little things, do some touch-ups, just focus on playing a complete 60, do all the little things right, and the result will take care of itself.”

The final benefit that can be looked at from Wednesday night is that the Mustangs find out that they have punched their ticket to the postseason.

While Melfort would’ve likely rather done it with a win, they can still be happy that the Melville Millionaires win over the Nipawin Hawks, ultimately got it done.

“It’s obviously great to book our ticket, but I think we got a lot of work to do here in the next few weeks before playoffs and then it’s really time to ramp it up here heading into the postseason,” Somers told northeastNOW.
