Mustangs heading south for weekend road trip

Feb 16, 2024 | 2:58 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are on the road this weekend, as they look to end a three-game slump.

Melfort lost their previous three contests to the top three teams in the SJHL, and will now face another two teams who currently hold a playoff spot.

First, on Friday, the 29-14-3 Mustangs will take on the 20-20-2-2 Bruins in Estevan.

It will be the final trip to Affinity Place for the Stangs on the year, and the fifth of six meetings this season, as the series has been split at two games apiece so far.

Then, on Saturday, the Blue and Green will clash with the 18-21-0-5 Weyburn Red Wings for the fourth and final time, as Melfort will go for the season series sweep.

As it stands today, the Mustangs are sitting in fourth place in the SJHL standings with 61 points, while Estevan commands seventh place with 44 points, and Weyburn clutches the eighth spot with 41 points.

In their last three matches, the Stangs have been outscored 14-5.

On the road this year, the Blue and Green have collected 27 points in 23 games, going 12-8-3.

The team is hopeful to receive a boost from their highest pick in the 2023 SJHL Draft.

Saskatoon product and current member of the U18 AAA Battlefords Stars, Tao Flory, will make his Junior A debut this weekend. The 16-year-old is scheduled to play up front, as the team deals with injuries.

In 41 games, the six-foot, 183-pound defenceman has four goals and three assists for seven points. Flory was selected fifth overall.

Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with the Suncrest College pregame show kicking them off at 6:45 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
