Back-to-Back Season Sweeps

Mustangs take dramatic shootout victory over Red Wings

Feb 18, 2024 | 9:30 AM

The Melfort Mustangs escaped Weyburn with a 4-3 shootout victory on Saturday night, for the fourth one-goal game between the two clubs this season.

Melfort won all of those contests, as they completed the season series sweep over the Red Wings for the second year in a row.

“It feels good, nice going 2 and 0 on the southern trip and then going 4 and 0 against Weyburn, and once again we’re short-staffed which seems to be the story all year, so unbelievable character guys out there,” assistant coach Tye Scherger told northeastNOW.

The Mustangs only had 11 forwards on the night, as Zac Somers was announced as a last-minute scratch, just moments before puckdrop.

That led to a bit of a slow start, as the Stangs were down 1-0 after the first period.

They picked it up in the second period, however, scoring three unanswered, before Weyburn cut it to 3-2 after 40 minutes.

The Red Wings then tied it at three, sending it to a scoreless overtime, followed by a shootout.

Clay Sleeva had the lone goal in the skills competition, as Kristian Coombs stopped all three he faced, for his first career shootout victory.

“Coomer stood on his head,” Scherger added. “He seemed very calm and patient. I think after practice every day, guys are just doing shootouts on him, so I mean he was prepped for it.”

Another first for Melfort tonight was Tye Evans burying goal number one for him this year.

“It’s good for him, a great time of year to get it, obviously if you don’t score it creeps up on you and it builds up on you, so good for him and glad he got it tonight,” explained Scherger.

The Mustangs will now be off until next Friday for their lone game of the week when they host the Melville Millionaires.

Melfort has now regained sole possession of third place in the SJHL standings.
