National Celebration

Curling Day in Canada just days away

Feb 21, 2024 | 5:38 PM

In less than a week’s time the City of Melfort, its curling club and local citizens will play host to one of the biggest annual curling events in Canada.

The 2024 rendition of Curling Day in Canada will touch down in Melfort this Saturday (Feb. 24th), with numerous activities planned for the fun-filled day.

“We’re very excited and can’t wait to get started with the day and the whole weekend,” explained organizing committee co-chair, Kerrie de Gooijer.

The day will commence at 11 a.m. where youth will spend an hour learning to curl, being taught by the very best.

Opening ceremonies won’t begin until 2 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace, which will also be the site for the hour-long live TSN broadcast.

“We’re gonna have opening ceremonies and kind of talk a little bit about why we were chosen and what we hope to accomplish out of the events,” de Gooijer added.

“The live broadcast starts at 4 p.m., so if we can pack the Palace and just make it look really busy in there, that’d be really great. We just kind of want to show the rest of Canada why Melfort is so excited about this event and loves curling, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Other curling events include photo opportunities with the Brier Tankard trophy, a team send-off for the local Special Olympics team that will be heading to Nationals, a draw to the button contest, an adult learn-to-curl session, a community showdown, a festival fun spiel, and crokicurl.

As for those who aren’t the biggest fans of the sport, there will be a kids’ fun zone, beer gardens, live music, a 50/50 raffle, cabaret, hot chocolate, and sleigh rides to keep you entertained.

“The day is very jam-packed with a lot of different kinds of activities, the idea being that it’s only one day, so trying to get something for everyone and all ages that would kind of appeal to a broader audience whether or not you curl,” de Gooijer told northeastNOW.

“We have a bunch of non-curling activities involved too because we just want this to be a big celebration for the community in the area and curling itself and try to get more people involved with the sport. Maybe it’s something that they’ve never thought of doing before, but maybe these events will get them thinking about it in the future.”
