Alberta Clipper hits Humboldt with snow, wind

Feb 28, 2024 | 2:05 PM

A significant snowfall in Humboldt has led to crews plowing streets for the first time in a while.

An Alberta Clipper weather system came through the province this week, bringing snowy, windy conditions.

Humboldt and other communities in central Saskatchewan saw over 10 centimetres of snow, with some seeing more than 20 centimetres.

“It was the wind that created drifting and some more challenging roadway conditions,” Director of Public Works and Utilities Peter Bergquist told northeastNOW.

Bergquist said emergency routes and the highways are the top priorities for plows in the city, followed by collector roadways and school zones. Residential collector and other important local roadways are next, and depending on the amount of snow, residential roads.

The mild, dry weather this winter has left plows mostly dormant in Humboldt.

“We haven’t had to do very much plowing. More so sanding if anything just to kind of keep the slippery sections under control,” said Bergquist.

He said they’re back into true winter mode with this recent snowfall, and more snow potentially coming later this week.

The wind with this system, and in general, makes everything more challenging for city crews.

“Especially when you have buildings and (snow) can accumulate and then it gets packed down by vehicles,” explained Bergquist. “Then that can get slippery or just create very packed surfaces that we have to eventually cut down with a grader.”
