Northeast Regional Curling Championships begin today in Melfort

Mar 1, 2024 | 8:24 AM

The region’s best high school curlers will descend on the Melfort Curling Club this weekend

Melfort will play host to the ‘Region C’ high school regional curling championships, beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday.

The boys, girls and mixed competitions are all happening in Melfort, as 20 teams in total are competing.

The communities of Shellbrook, Humboldt, Choiceland, Prince Albert, Tisdale, Watrous, La Ronge, Wadena, Melfort, Carrot River, Ituna, Saskatoon, and Wynyard will all be represented.

“It should be a good day at the curling rink,” Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) Phys ed teacher, Lane Gerwing told northeastNOW.

The top two representatives from the North East School Division, Horizon Central, and North Central, along with Saskatoon for the boys, earned their spot to compete.

The top two from each bracket (boys, girls, and mixed) will earn a spot at provincials.

“There’s a little bit at stake for the teams competing… for some teams, it’ll be the end of their season and for other teams, it’ll be their chance to book their ticket to provincials,” Gerwing added.

Draws run at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, with draws scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the possibility for a 4 p.m. draw.

The restaurant at the curling rink will be open throughout the curling days.

Other regional hosts include Regina for ‘Region A’, Yorkton for ‘Region B’ (East Central), and Lashburn and St. Walburg for ‘Region D’ (North West).
